Gilding Moldings

The reign of Louis XIV, “Le Grand Siècle” (The Great Century), ushered in a splendid era of French design, ornamentation, craftsmanship, construction and gilding techniques. This is notably demonstrated by the Palace of Versailles which is called by some the Temple of Gilding.

Gilding remains popular for rejuvenating spaces today and the scope of use of these techniques is constantly growing. This universally popular ornamentation can restore or breathe new life to stucco work, decor of walls and ceiling.

Flossing is gilding that can be used to highlight details. Common areas are columns, moldings and ornamentation to elevate the grandeur. Materials can range from gold, silver or brass leaf to a faux gold paint.

Decorative painting glazes are translucent coatings applied over a base paint to alter its appearance and create various decorative effects. These glazes are typically made from a mixture of pigments, resins, and solvents.

Glazes can intensify the colors of the underlying base coat or change the tone and hue, allowing for a more dynamic visual effect. By layering glazes, we can create a sense of depth, making surfaces look more textured and three-dimensional creating a play on light. Different techniques, such as sponging, rag rolling, or stippling, can be applied using glazes to achieve various visual styles, such as marbling, antiquing, or a weathered look.
