Wall Gilding

Architectural Gilding is the process of adding detail or accents of metal leaf. The methods of gilding today for wood are from the Renaissance era that sought to refine ancient Egypt. Traditional Water Gilding, the most highly regarded form for furnitures and frames is a time consuming process as the gilder meticulously flutters at minimum six coats with a brush 1/250,0000th sheet on a flawless surface. Burnishing provides a high luster that served as reflective surfaces to enhance ambient lighting fueled by candlelight. Water Gilding is used today for both the gilding of new projects and for restoration.

Oil Gilding uses an oil based size or varnish over prepared surface for the leaf to be laid and compressed. It cannot be burnished and offers a more matt to moderately bright appearance depending on the metal of the leaf. It is a simpler and faster method where the leaf is laid directly on a sticky adhesive composed of water, alcohol and/or varnish.

The art of gilding requires precision and a delicate touch as metal leaf is extremely fine. Gilding can be done in a variety of karats and metals such as gold leaf, silver leaf, palladium, aluminum leafing or a combination. We work collaboratively to see which is best suited for decorative enhancement of accent walls.

Decorative painting glazes are translucent coatings applied over a base paint to alter its appearance and create various decorative effects. These glazes are typically made from a mixture of pigments, resins, and solvents.

Glazes can intensify the colors of the underlying base coat or change the tone and hue, allowing for a more dynamic visual effect. By layering glazes, we can create a sense of depth, making surfaces look more textured and three-dimensional creating a play on light. Different techniques, such as sponging, rag rolling, or stippling, can be applied using glazes to achieve various visual styles, such as marbling, antiquing, or a weathered look.
